Welcome to IBM’s Almaden Research Center, one of eight laboratories worldwide that make up IBM Research. Located about 55 miles southeast of San Francisco, this laboratory occupies a striking facility on 690 acres in the foothills above Silicon Valley.
Almaden’s staff of about 400 plus visiting staff carries out its job of ensuring IBM’s future success in two primary ways: by advancing fundamental scientific understanding and by working with IBM product developers to use this knowledge to create and improve IBM products.
Within IBM, we are the heart of database research (Almaden researchers invented the relational database in the 1970s). We also have strong programs in other important computer science disciplines and in physical and materials science and storage systems. In addition, technology licensing is a key element in our value creation strategy and a source of significant mutual benefits for IBM Research Division and its external partners.
